Football Debate – Steven Gerrard vs Frank Lampard vs Paul Scholes

Sharing is caring!

Remember, this is not who’s better out of Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool. This is Steven Gerrard vs Frank Lampard vs Paul Scholes, who’s better? A football debate I heard this all throughout their playing careers, and I still hear this debate now!

Before being a Man Utd fan, I was a football fan so, United fans might not want to read what I’m going to say from this point on (unpopular opinion) but all I know is when watching these three great footballers play, Gerrard stood out for me. So, if you ask me who’s the better player Scholes, Gerrard, or Lampard my answer would be Steven Gerrard.

Making a point that Steven Gerrard is better than Frank Lampard and especially Manchester United legend, Paul Scholes is the last thing want to do but, I’ve been asked the question more than a few times, and here we’re all about being ‘straight up and honest’.

I am going to break down my reason why…

Football Debate – No Stats

I don’t want to back my reasons up with stats because Paul Sholes would finish last by a long shot as they both have a lot more goals and assists. Also, I don’t want to back my argument with what trophies they’ve won because Steven Gerrard wouldn’t stand a chance obviously. If you want to read an article on this debate based around statistics you can do so here.

  1. Goals & Assists
  2. Passes & Touches per game
  3. pass success percentage
  4. Defence (blocks, tackles, clearances, aerial battles won)
  5. Individual accolades

Although the article is based on statistics surprisingly we both conclude to the same answer. Well, the same answer in putting Steven Gerrard first, however, I’d put Scholes second and Lampard third.

Best Central Midfielders Attributes

When you watch football and understand the game without stats influencing your outlook too much, you look at footballers in more depth and analyze the game in a deeper way. For example, you look at things like;

  • Control the game/tempo
  • Awareness
  • Vision
  • Technique
  • Positioning

What we also have to understand the teams these respective players are playing in require different roles and objectives “The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club won’t be worth a dime.” (Babe Ruth).

In a team where they had great players and were winning trophies, Scholes and Lampard didn’t necessarily have to be doing multiple jobs in different areas of the field. They knew their roles like everyone else in their team and that’s what worked best.

Gerrard was a lot more, here there, and everywhere kind of player. Often throughout his whole career, the pressure was on Gerrard to perform or do ‘something special’ which he often provided.

What We Can’t Ignore

All the different factors above are why I want to strip it down to their footballing abilities. I could name a ton of best central midfielders who don’t have great ‘stats’ but are some of the most gifted and consistent footballers I’ve seen like Xavi, Iniesta, Pirlo, even Zidane one of the greatest midfielders in history didn’t have the greatest stats.

Speaking of these players, a lot of you may have seen quotes of players talking about how good Paul Scholes was;

“My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder. Scholes is undoubtedly the greatest midfielder of his generation” – Zinedine Zidane

Paul Scholes

“In the last 15 – 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen – the most complete – is Scholes” – Xavi

Quotes on Steven Gerrard

“Steven Gerrard would be the captain of my World Xl dream team. Gerrard is a complete player because can play in every position and can do everything with a football at any given time in a game” – Francesco Totti

Steven Gerrard

“While at Milan he Ancelotti came to me and said, ‘i want to sign Steven Gerrard to play next to you in midfield – what do you think?’ Without any hesitation, I told him, ‘do it – go and sign him.’ At this time he was probably the most complete midfield player in Europe, of course, I wanted to partner him.

These are the opinions of world-class footballers, my point for including these quotes is these opinions are based on pure footballing ability they don’t base anything on stats or accolades.

3 Quick Questions…

A few things I always ask myself and yes its hindsight but still an answerable question

Could Frank Lampard do what Gerrard did in that Liverpool team? I don’t think so

Could Paul Scholes do what Gerard did n that Liverpool team? Again, no

Could Gerrard do what they did in their respective teams? I’d say yes

Remember, I am answering these questions from what I’ve seen throughout their careers, their gameplay, and their adaptability.

3 Great Players…

Three great players with three great careers it would be unfair to judge who’s the better player from stats, individual & team accolades. Stripping the debate down to pure ability is the way I think is logical.

Frank Lampard

Sorry to the Lampard fans I know I have not involved him as much as the other two but personally, when it comes to the footballing ability I don’t think Lampard is a great player. Now, don’t mistake that for me calling Frank Lampard rubbish, he was one of the best attacking midfielders and extremely good at what he did, if not the best at what he did.

Personally, I just think footballing wise he’s not on Scholes or Gerrard’s level but the debate can definitely still be had.

Conclusion

There’s no right or wrong answer with these things, a football debate is all about opinion (someone could say Teemu Pukki is the best striker to play in the Premier League and that would be their entitled opinion so you can’t say their outright wrong but….in this case, they would be wrong) all you can do is give your opinions and back it up with valid reasons.

For me, Gerrard is a complete midfielder, there are not many attributes that I’d say he’s weak on if any! Even with things you wouldn’t associate with him, like pace, taking on players, and weaker foot, Gerrard was not a slouch in these departments which makes him the best central midfielder out of the three.

  1. The first thing I want to say is that while playing the football of these three football players, football was for me perhaps in the last golden times. What all three have in common is that they were all bearers of the game in their clubs and they all left a big mark. Great players for me and I’m in a dilemma which is better. I share your opinion that it may be Gerrard, considering that he was Liverpool’s hope from the very beginning.

    1. Yeah it was a hard decision for me too. You’re right the mark they left at their club are huge and may never be replaced, I loved watching all 3 of them but I had to give an unbiased opinion

  2. Hi

An interesting read and as a United fan overall, Gerrard is a brave pick for you. I recently read a compelling article that compared all of the statistics and came out Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes as 1, 2 & 3 in that order but the result doesn’t sit with me.

My theory is that Lampard scored goals and as a midfielder who sits high up the field he was always around about the action. Gerrard was more of a box to box midfielder, he galvanized a good team but not a great team and when he did pop up with a goal or an assist, it was usually spectacular.

However, Scholes was my favourite (I don’t support any of these teams). It just feels like he was better which is an argument that probably won’t stand up in court but I think it was Iniesta that once said Paul Scholes is the greatest midfielder he’s ever played against and he knows a thing or 2 about midfield

    1. Hi Alex, Yeah it was brave haha. I have also seen a few articles saying Lampard was the best. If it’s based on stats lampard will always come out on top, but people base their opinions so much on stats these days don’t they. Of course he was a good player but like you said, he was always around the action basically a CAM rather than CM.

Also right, a lot of top top players have said Scholes is the best midfielder England have ever produced and I can’t take that with a pinch of salt. I don’t mind when people say Scholes is better because I definitely see why they say it. But or me, as a Football player and not just a midfielder, Gerrard just had everything.

  3. Hi, i found your website very interesting and well thought out. You obviously love your football, that comes shining through. The way you have spread your content out on your pages is very easy on the eye, making it far easier to read. There is alot of interesting content, and reading your views on Lampard, Gerard and scholes was interesting. I have read a few of your posts, ie about who should be the captain of man united, and think they have to look outside the pool of players they curently have at the moment. I believe Harry Maguire was not the player united should have gone for in the first place, and my reasoning is, in my opinion he is not a very good defender. his positional play is poor. The wayne rooney post was really good. Overall i found your site to be really engaging, and a great read. I will retun to your site in the future. Thanks John.

    1. Hi John thanks mate. Yes I agree with your comments about Harry Maguire and he should never have been chosen! If you had to give the captaincy so someone who would you pick?

Thanks again for browsing through appreciate it

  4. Wow! I can only say the good things about all you have shared here. The information is invaluable and well worthy to me. The fact that the whole overview has everything else involved is just amazing and something that I will definitely look to do. An interesting read and as a United fan overall, Gerrard is a brave pick for you. I recently read a compelling article that compared all of the statistics and came out Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes as 1, 2 & 3 in that order but the result doesn’t sit with me.

    1. Haha yeah, I try and keep things honest and not be biased. I’ve seen that article you’re talking about too, and it doesn’t sit right with me either lol was one of the reasons I made this post.

I agree with your points, I definitely feel Lampard is in 3rd position out of the three but was still a great player!

  5. I personally agree with you that Zidane is one of the greatest midfielders in history. And I know he didn’t have the greatest stats. So to compare Steven Gerrard vs Frank Lampard vs Paul Scholes and point out a winner based on stats, is not fair.

I also really like Babe Ruth’s quote. So true! Thanks for stating it!

  6. Wow, really great read!  I never thought about Gerards intangibles that can’t be measured. You make a valid point in that these players don’t have any say in what team they go to so judging a player solely on statistics and team championships doesn’t get to the real answer of pure talent.

After reading this, I’m on board that Gerard is the best of the 3.  Now if only we could go back in time and see him on a couple teams with more assets!  Thanks for the opinion piece!

    1. I always try and give an opinion from a level playing ground, I’m glad you noticed.

Haha if only we could go back in time! Thanks for reading Mike!

  7. Based on your article, I guess I shouldn’t think about my favorite team when comparing these great footie players, but I can’t help but lump the player in with the team sometimes. That said, you make solid points on all 3 players and it could be argued that any one of them could be the “better” player. My vote goes to Steven Gerrard as it was awesome to watch him at Liverpool and all the things he accomplished with the team. YNWA!

    1. Hahaha i know what you mean. Yes, all great players, pains me to say Gerrard but I agree, when watching him he was just a different breed on the pitch.

P.S there has been time when he has walked alone 😛
